Among his notable contributions was his instrumental role in shaping the Birla Institute of Technology, a premier educational institution founded in 1955 by B.M. Birla in Mesra, Ranchi. Shri G.P. Birla was a visionary leader whose dedication to education, science, and culture left an indelible mark on India’s heritage. He founded the G.P. Birla Archaeological, Astronomical and Scientific Research Institute and the B.M. Birla Heart Research Centre, pioneering initiatives that bridged the gap between science and societal well-being.

His contributions include establishing several iconic temples and science museums that continue to inspire and educate including the B.M. Birla Science and Technology Centre in Jaipur, the B.M. Birla Planetariums in Jaipur, Hyderabad, and Chennai, the Lord Venkateshwara Temple in Hyderabad, and the Shri Lakshminarayan Temples in Bhopal and Jaipur. He also founded archaeological museums in Hyderabad and Bhopal, preserving India’s rich history.

Driven by his commitment to cultural preservation, Shri G.P. Birla generously supported the renovation of numerous sites of historical, architectural, and religious significance, ensuring the protection of the nation’s cultural heritage for future generations.

In recognition of his immense contributions to society, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2006. Shri G.P. Birla’s legacy continues to serve as a guiding light, inspiring initiatives that uphold and advance India’s cultural and scientific excellence.

Renowned as an educationist and philanthropist, Mrs. Nirmala Birla seamlessly embodies multifaceted roles, and the hallmark of her career has been a commitment to shaping the nation's future, evidenced through her philanthropic contributions in the field of education, science, astronomy, archaeology and art.

Building upon the 170-year-old legacy of her family, she has played a pivotal role over the last 60 years in establishing educational institutions like Rukmani Birla Modern High School in Jaipur and Modern High School International in Kolkata. She has worked tirelessly on a variety of education and infrastructure criteria to maintain Modern High School for Girls, Kolkata, as a leader in the field of primary and secondary education in the city.

She established the Rukmani Birla Modern High School in Jaipur in the year 2003. Like Modern High School for Girls in Kolkata, it is recognised as a premier institution in the city of Jaipur, and is located alongside the multi-specialty hospital called the Rukmani Birla Hospital. She has been the constant voice that has hosted a value system and ethics that have been the hallmark of both schools for decades.

As Chairman of the Governing Body of the G P Birla Archaeological Astronomical and Scientific Research Institute in Hyderabad, which houses the study of Science, Archaeology and Astronomy and also has a Library a Planetarium, an Observatory and a Dinosaurium. The Centre has had the distinction of hosting eminent scientists as well as 31 Nobel laureates. She has been the force behind much of the Group’s philanthropic work: the Birla Planetarium in Hyderabad, the Art Gallery, and the recent opening of the Antarctica Experience Corner at the Science Museum.

She has played a pivotal role in constantly transforming the planetarium within the complex into a cutting-edge facility, her personal collection of limited-edition porcelain dolls has become a renowned collector’s item, she has also launched the space museum along with the teaching material it provides to students and scholars. Her commitment to innovation and excellence is written all over these institutions.
